Ok at the risk of showing my mechanical ignorance. I bought a 1989 YJ. I love it. However, on cold mornings it will not idle. Once it gets really good and warmed up (20 or 30 minutes), it runs great. Sometimes it even struggles on warmer mornings. My inital thought was I need a carburator, but after reading some of the threads, it sounds more like my choke. And here in lies my ignorance, Is the choke separate from the carb? I thought it was part of it. And when I was pricing carbs, I found three different ones, how do I know which carb I have? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i think if it is stock it will have the carter. my jeep ran and idled like crap so i decided to check it out... turned out my choke plate only had one bolt holding it in and it was loose (because of previous owner trying to "hurry up and get the carb on".) the choke is on the side of the carb near the engine and should be electric. not sure what you should check for though.... if you know any old school guys you can ask them for tips on setting the carb up...

There are 3 simple steps to fix this problem:
1. Remove the Carter carb from your Jeep
2. Place Carter Carb in trash bin
3. Replace with a Motorcraft or Weber
All joking aside, the Carters are junk. Search on here for articles on the Motorcraft 2100 carb. Simple swap that make your engine run much better at all angles.
