any input on the wheelin capabilities of the 35 ? i can get one to replace the amc 20 i have in the cj but have heard mixed reviews about them . i'll be keeping the 33x10.5 bfgs and it wont be locked . thanks.

pinion seal leaking , still has the 2 piece axles and geared way too high [ stock gear ]. i can pick up the 35 for next to nothing and even though its geared at 3:54 , it's still lower than what i have . i can get it cheap enough to pay to regear the front. it's not the perfect set up , i'd like steeper gears , 1 piece axles and a locker but cash is tight now since i just bought a 97 yj [ 4'' lift w/ 33s] for the wife.

You'd be better off converting the 20 to one peice axles. The D35 is notorioulsy weak. It is not uncommon for them to fail/break merely turning 33's - open or locked.

I'm not saying I woulndt run one, I have before on 32's and I am now with 31's. I will probably keep it when I do my SOA conversion but I know it will eventually give way to the bigger tires. When it does I will not waste my money on it, I will upgrade.

I certainly wouldn't buy one as an upgrade because it isn't one.

thats what i've been hearing but mostly from the pages of jp magazine . what year did the 35 start going in ?

in the YJ - 1987, probably earlier in the Cherokee.

Jp is not the only one making that claim. Ask anyone who has been into this sport or hobby long enough to see or have one break (which isn't long).

They're not bad axles, but they're just not made for big tires. You will have guys (Bounty Hunter is one) who run 33's on them sucessfully, but I guarantee he knows it's limits and drives accordingly (as do I).

If you decide to buy one (I wouldn't) then make sure it is very cheap or free.

I picked up my Ford 8.8, discs and 4.10 gears, for $100. Deals on strong axles are out there if you do the leg work yourself.

Hold out for something stronger, the D35 isn't worth the time and effort it takes to install.

And yes, my welded D35 has held up to abuse for years, but there's a pair of D44's in the batters box
