Boy do I feel smart...... (no additional comments needed):(

I was building in the shop and I had 20 pieces of steel that I had just rinsed with naphtha and they were resting on a piece of expanded on top of a oil drain container. I had a small bowl of naphtha right next to it that got spilled, a little over a quart. It was running all over the floor so I grabbed a old sheet the wife gave me and laid it on the spill to sop it up and it did.

I forgot about the sheet soaked with naphtha.........

Later I started welding these parts about 4 feet away and woosh!

A flame started getting bigger and bigger, I tried to stomp it out and nothing, I kicked it out of the garage and right next to my truck!! Crap, I kicked it away from my truck and onto the neighbors lawn, now its about 3 feet high and 3 feet wide flame and black smoke everywhere, crap, I kicked it back onto my driveway but away from my truck and it kept on burning, black smoke billowing out. I finally shot it out with a garden hose...

I ruined my shoes...

many lessons learned....p0p

oh and by the way if you reply to this thread....no flaming!:purple: :purple: :purple:

He he, you think we won't flame? Don't worry, I accidentally lit the side of my face up doing stoopid stuff (nothing illegal)

We had one of those "know it all" guys in my shop. Had a Chrysler with a fuel pressure problem. His way to test the pressure in the fuel line was to take off the line and watch to how fast the fuel would come out. Got the porter to crank it while he held the line in one hand and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Needless to say, a small explosion, a somewhat large fire, signed hairs and out of a job.

Naphtha, you know, mineral spirits, parts washer fluid... some people call it "safety" solvent:D , it has a flash point of 142F, or just under that of mig weld slag:welder:

An occurence like that just burns you up, ey?

Glad you're OK!

A guy I used to work with was wearing a denim shop apron while doing some torching. The apron had folded at the bottom and slag was hitting the apron and collecting in the fold. I was watching from a few feet away and let the flame get about 4" before I told him he was about to roast his chestnuts on an open fire. If I had the forethought, I would have hit him with the fire extinguisher for kicks.
Glad you didn't burn down your shop and truck.
