Timber Ridge Ranch again will be the host location for the annual MW4WDA 4th of July Trailride in Castana, IA. Those of you who have been here before can testify to the steep climbs, off-camber, tight and wooded trails and the phenomenal traction offered by the Loess Hills. Loess means “wind blownâ€, and although this powder-like soil is found in a few other places across the state and nation, it is deepest here, reaching depths of over 200 feet. Only in China can you find similar geological formations. Timber Ridge features a system of trails located on 2,600 acres of this densely wooded terrain.
A poker run is planned, and there will be a door prize drawing. Showers, ice and breakfast are available at the lodge. The association members of Timber Ridge Ranch have traditionally put on an impressive display of fireworks and should not be missed. A full schedule of events is listed elsewhere in this packet.
Registration fees for the event will be an inflation busting $90.00—the same as last year, and include camping fees and trailriding privileges for 1 trail rig, as well as a dash plaque, a T-Shirt and one door prize raffle ticket. Additional T-shirts are available by advance order with your registration form and will follow the traditional Castana style. There will be a very limited number of t-shirts available for sale during the event.
New this year: There will be two raffles, one for tickets given with registration, and one for those tickets bought separately. It is our intention to send every registrant home with a door prize. Registrations can be filled out online at www.DakotaDirtDiggers.com if you have a PayPal account, or by completing the attached registration form and mailing to the address listed on the form.
All Pre-registration Information Must Be Recieved By June 29th. Including Payment. Any Late Pre-registrations Will Not Be On Site In Castana And Will Not Be Accepted.
After June 29th You must Register On Site In Castana When You Arrive
All trail rigs must pass tech requirements (listed elsewhere in this packet). These rules will be rigorously enforced—a safe and enjoyable event is our highest priority. Those who choose not to follow the rules will be ejected from the event without a refund.

Tech Inspection Requirements
Point & Shoot:
q Steering box and associated linkage must be secure and free from excessive play.
Castana has a lot of trees. You need to be able to avoid them.
What Speeds Up Must Slow Down:
q Front and Rear axles must have an independent braking mechanism.
q All brake lines must be in good repair and securely mounted to axle and/or frame
q Brake pedal pressure will be checked with engine stopped. Pedal cannot be spongy or sink to the floor; brakes must have pressure.
q Pinion Brakes cannot be the primary braking system. Pinion Brakes may be allowed on Rockwell axles at the discretion of the tech inspector. If there is ANY doubt, please contact us for clarification.
Castana has steep climbs. You need to be able to stop.
Nuts!:
q No more than 1 of 5, 1 of 6, or 2 of 8 (not adjacent to one another) missing per tire.
We’d like you to keep your tires on your rig and out of the trail.
Captain Hook:
q Hooks must be secured with two (2) ½†or larger, grade 5 or better bolts. Backing plates are highly recommended.
q A 2†receiver style hitch may also be accepted, provided an acceptable pintle or clevis mount is provided.
q All trailer balls must be removed. No exceptions.
There are only two types of ‘wheelers: those who’ve been stuck, and those who will be. When that happens, you need a safe place to pull from both front and rear.
Suspension:
q No threaded rod for u-bolts
q No cracked main leafs
q No lift blocks in front suspension
Lightning in a Bottle:
q Battery must be retained by O.E.M. style or equivalent mount. Wire, Rubber, Nylon or Bungee straps are NOT acceptable.
q Battery must not move.
We want the fireworks in the sky, not under your hood.
I’m Exhausted!:
q All trail rigs must have mufflers attached to the engine No open headers or straight pipes.
Restraining Order:
q A properly anchored seatbelt is required for all occupants of the vehicle.
We definitely don’t want to have to retrieve you from the trail with a spatula.
Cage Match:
q If you like to cruise the trails topless, a full roll cage that protects all passengers is required. Previously rolled trail rigs with obvious structural damage must also have a roll bar to compensate for the compromised body structure.
q Roll bars must be secured at a minimum of 4 points with a minimum of three (3) 3/8†grade 5 or better bolts at each mounting point.
q Roll bars mounted to the body or bed of a trail rig requiring roll bars must use backing plates with a 3/16†minimum thickness. It is strongly encouraged that the backing plate not have the same footprint as the roll bar mount to avoid a “punch effectâ€.
q The main hoop must be a continuous loop, minimum of 1-3/4†diameter, .120†wall, steel.
q The kickers must be a minimum of 1-3/4†diameter, .120†wall, and attach to the main hoop at least ½ way or higher up the main hoop.
q The tech inspector reserves the right to fail a rollbar due to poor welding or flawed design.
We’re very serious about this, every year the Diggers have attended Castana, SOMEONE has rolled a vehicle. It happens far too often to slack on this safety item.
Tools of the Trade:
q A screw type clevis that fits your attachment points and tow strap is required.
q A 2†wide minimum tow strap or rope with a minimum 10,000 pound rating is required.
q No straps or ropes with attached hooks allowed
q No chains allowed.
q A minimum 2 pound, fully charged, type ABC fire extinguisher mounted with a quick-release bracket within reach of seat-belted driver is required
q No Halon extinguishers
Misc:
q No visible fluid leaks on vehicle. (We hate vehicles that drool)
q Loose items in the vehicle must be secured. (rolling a vehicle is exciting enough without dodging projectiles)
q A first aid kit is a worthwhile investment, and could give you relief from an unplanned encounter with burning nettles, bee stings or a stick in the eye.
q A CB radio is also highly recommended. 48†maximum antenna length.
