today, my youngest son and i rode around Port Aransas because we already rode in Corpus Christi the night before. we just wanted to ride the ferry boats on bikes, see the ridley's sea turtles, and watch the dolphins (porpoise). we ended up spending a few hours riding all over the very tiny town and seeing all we wanted to see and more.

this is a picture rich story.

/\ this is the log showing how small the area we rode actually is. we went across the ferries and all the way out on the half mile long jetty into the gulf of mexico.

we started with a nice lunch at subway. 6" sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies. then we moved the jeep over to a parking area and unloaded the bikes and locked the jeep up. we had 6 apples in the handle bar bag so we could snack while riding and our normal water bottle.

from subway, we rode across town and along the piers to where we happen to know the sea turtles hang out. we see them regularly here and jarrod usually gets to scratch their backs with a long stick. today, it was only smaller turtles though and htey were too skiddish to pet.

right past the turtles, jarrod found a huge bird that he thought he could sneak up on to scare or grab. the bird was smarter then jarrod thought though and kept moving away.

luckily he did though as we found out those birds have a very sharp point on their beak that will rip a person open like a knife. i told jarrod he better watch out or that bird would get mad and take a big huge poop on him and ruin his day. we left the bird after that.

we rode to the boat ferry after that. and rode on them across the channel and back

i could get no good pics of any dolphins while we were on the ferry or by the turtles so i have no shots of them till later on. but we saw tons of them. all over the place, they were.

after the ferries, we rode across town to the beach. i say across town but it was something like 1.2 miles or maybe 1.5. the sand was very packed so it was like riding on a nice smooth road.

jarrod enjoyed skidding in the sand here. from here we rode along the beach to the far north side of town, maybe another mile, and out to the fishing jetty.

we once again were greeted by dolphins and turtles. no good dolphin pics at this point either. but the good pics are coming.

we rode along the jetty for a bit. its a half mile jetty but the going is very rough. its very poorly maintained and we walked most of it.

this is how most of hte jetty was though. large blocks of pink granite just thrown down to form a break and allow the channel to be dredged for the large oil ships and transport ships. jarrod carried his little heavy dyno bmx a lot today. i am very glad my hybrid is aluminum and light. i had to help with his bike a fair bit on the trip out.

when we got all the way out, jarrod liked sitting on the end and watching the dolphins play. there was a huge group of them playing and surfacing.

as you can tell, ipods are not great for photos.

ha ha ha, here is the funny part that another fellow and i were waiting for. his wife was up by jarrod and apparently had not been here before either.

we warned them both when we all first got out there to not get to close to the end because of the waves. she escaped with only minor wetting, jarrod was not so lucky.

from here, we made the half mile walk back out from the end of the jetty. a fisherman headed in at the same time as we were carried jarrod's bike for him if jarrod would carry his fishing pole. jarrod agreed and got very lucky on the walk back. he had a lot of fun though, even with the wave surprise.

on the ride home, jarrod didn;t remember the warning about soft sand on the edges of the roads.

we headed back to the jeep and loaded the bike's up for the 35 minute ride home. we had a fun day of exploring Port Aransas on bike, instead of from the jeep seats. jarrod enjoyed it a lot more on bike because he could actually explore and stop and feel or look closely at things.

it is really nice when its sunny but yesterday was still ok. the over cast weather made it so we didn;t have to worry about sun burns or anything like that and since it was not windy, we could actually ride on the beach instead of being blown across it
