Possible Engine Rebuild/Replacement

I have a '94 YJ, and I have problems. When in traffic and most of the time the engine is usually warm. That is the only thing in common when this has occured. It sputters like it's running out of gas or something is in the gas tank. I first thought I just got some muck in the tank, but yesterday it backfired. So, I know it's getting gas, but that's about all I know. It's almost sputtering like it's missing. Do you guys think it's electrical? Someone thought I might need a valve job, or possibly a complete overhaul! I really hope that's not it, b/c I don't have the funds to do that. Has this happened to anyone else? And if so, what did you do to solve the problem? Thanks for any help.

is this happening during acceleration? might check th O2 sensors.... My 97 spit, pop, sputtered, fell on its face,lunged,jerked,thrashed.....you get the point.... changed both O2 sensors and now runs smooth as a babies butt......ever how smooth that is????

Yeah it's shot. The best thing to do is to just junk it.

Check the fuel pressure at the rail and make sure the pump is putting out what it should. Just because it is getting fuel doesn't mean it's getting enough fuel.

mine was doing that... i replaced the coil and the O2 sensor.... now she's running like a (something that runs great)
