Problems downshifting in my CJ-5 with a T-176

I just bought an '80 CJ-5 with a T-176 transmission and a 304 V8 - this is my first jeep so I'm just a beginner here.. I'm not really a "car person" yet but I'm trying my best to learn everything I can..

Anyway, it shifts up through all the gears just fine, but I'm having problems downshifting. If I'm going around a turn and need to go from 3rd to 2nd, most of the time I have to slow WAY down before getting into 2nd gear.. Every once in a while it goes right into gear, but not very often.

Any ideas what the problem might be? The guy I bought it from said he rebuilt the transmission with new synchronizer assemblies.

Thanks,

when up shift into second i go about 10 when down shifting im around 12-13mph.
but i didnt think a 176 was used in '80 i think that would be a SR-4 if that makes a diffrence....[addsig]

From what I understand the SR-4 was used only in the 80-81's with 151's and some 258's.. Mine is a 304.. I was told it was a T-176, but I will get under there tonight and double check..

I doubt it is an SR4...that thing would blow up under the power of a V8 hehe. It probably is a 176...the T176 was the V8 transmission from 1980-1986...before that it was the T18 & T98. Those were used from '71-'79.[addsig]

rest assured that if its stock, it is a t-176... it was the only manual available behind the 304 in 80[addsig]

Yup, it is either a T-177 or T-176, basically the same transmission. T-177 has a bit lower gears. But, sound as if the synchronizer is shot in your transmission. :-( [addsig]

The previous owner said he recently rebuilt the transmission and replaced the synchronizer assemblies - is there any chance it just needs adjusting, or is there any kind of break-in period where it would be difficult to shift?

Ok last night I was able to get it to downshift consistently by disengaging the clutch and reving the engine while in neutral just before downshifting.. So at least I can drive around without slowing way down around turns, but I'd like to get this problem fixed.. Anyone have any ideas on what I can try? Am I going to have to drop the transmission or could this be a lubrication problem or somesuch? I'm very new to all of this so any help would be greatly appreciated..

Clutch seems fine, but I'm not completely sure of its history.. I'll have to check on the fluid..
