Recall

I just got a letter in the mail concerning my '02 wrangler. It says that all of 4.0's from the past few years are being recalled because debris such as leaves and sticks get into the engine compartment, sit on the exhaust manifold and catch fire. It says that if you bring the jeep into a dealer they'll install an "engine shield" in about a half an hour that will prevent the problem. Has anyone had a problem with debris causing engine fires? Has anyone had the shield installed? I'm trying to decide whether it is worth getting it or not...[addsig]

Mine is an 01, and it was recalled about a year ago. I thought it was something about the ignition switch that caused these "fires". Anyway, whatever it was, even though from personal experience mine had not caught on fire, I went ahead and took it in when I got the recall slip, and it said there was a chance the engine could burst into flames. In fact, I was like freaking out that I had to drive my jeep for the next few days until I could get into the dealer. I'll have to look through my papers to see exactly what they fixed, it might be a totally different recall, but there was def. some talk of fires in mine, if yours is saying this I think I'd swing it in...what's a 1/2 hour wait, anyway? You won't even have to get someone to follow you and bring you back. Just hang around and watch ESPN and drink bad dealership coffee.[addsig]

normally i would jump on a recall, but it sounds like they are going to just throw a big piece of plastic over the manifold-- thought maybe someone would have one to tell if there's something special about it-- pros and cons-- maybe gets in the way of aftermarket intakes or something?[addsig]

I don't know about the shields, but the times that I have been to the Jeep wrecking yards, I have noticed several engine compartment fires in TJ's. I would check it out, even if it doesn't fix the problem and it catches fire anyway, you did everything you were supposed to do to fix the problem. This means new Jeep for free if it does 8-) [addsig]

My boss had a TJ and she got the same recall, and had it fixed. It's just a metal shield. Pretty cheap actually, but it keeps debris from getting up in there. Truthfully, debris could get up on my YJ exhaust manifold and burn... I wonder if there's something sucky about the manifold? Anyway, it can't hurt, and if you want to take it off later, it's just held on by pre-existing bolts. Go get it.
