warn lockomatic hubs?

A local guy has a 77 CJ7, 304, T150, D20, and he has Warn Lock O Matic hubs. Basically if they are left in "Free" they work like automatic hubs, but if you put them in "Lock" they stay locked (supposedly for use in 4low and heavy pulling. Anybody know anything about these? Weaknesses, when they were available, etc..... They are nice but there has to be a reason I haven't seen many of them. Thanks
 

I'm no fan of auto hubs, but these are pretty good. They have the same problem as all auto hubs though, they unlock/lock when the direction of tire rotation changes when in the auto position.....but you can lock these when things get tough. They are every bit as strong(or stronger) as the manual 6 bolt Warn premiums that came on that Jeep from the factory.

If you look on the hub body or knob, you might find the IH logo. I don't think that they came factory on Jeeps, but they were used on alot of Scout IIs. The Scout II D30 and D44 use a stub and 6 bolt mount very similar to the CJ D30, so they swap.
 
I was thinking of swapping my hubs on my 85 to the 6 bolt so I can get some premium hubs to use and now this is something else I am considering. Thanks for the info.
