cj steering shaft ?

what is the correct way to remove steering shaft from steering coloum shaft ? I took bolt out & tried hammering it down it moved some feels tight i don,t want to screw it up ineed to replace steering bushing & bushing retainer my book dosen,t show any of this

IDo you mean the part of the shaft going from the colomn to the stearing box? If so (on a CJ5) you have to take the bolt completely out of each side. then you may have to pry the ends a little. When I removed mine I was swapping the stearing box. I am not sure if they will collaps but I don't think they will very easily. You may have to pull the stearing box forward. If you meen the shaft inside the colomn I have no Idea.
 
I am pretty sure you will have to loosen the box to get enough room to remove shaft off of the splines. On mine you have to remove the bolt completely. The shaft is notched so it will not come out unless the bolt is all the way out.
