Need upgrade on current axle gear ratio?
have a 1991 wrangler 4.0L, riding on a 4" suspension lift and 35x12.50
tires, the current rear axle reads 5206 3008
07 5502. what should I upgrade to and is it a self simple job!
thanks

is it a manual or auto

I'm pretty sure you have 3.07 gears if they are stock... If you want stock performance back with the 35s then you will need a 4.56 ratio.

Not sure if you want more low end though, then it would change to 4.88 or lower (lower gears=higher #s)

yes manual and stock gears, would it be better off to get a better dana?
would the 4.56 ratio make a bigger difference!
and is it an easy job or should I have a specialist have it done
thanks again been really help!

I'm not sure what you mean by "getting a dana". The axles you have under your jeep now are DANA. The front is a Dana 30 and rear Dana 35. If you were talking about upgrading axles then that's up to you. The rule of thumb that I heard was; any tire size 35" or higher, the Dana 35 rear axle will most likely break. When I upgraded tires, I found myself a Dana 44 for the rear and regeared that along with my D30.

4.56 will make a big difference, I assume that you rarely use 5th gear with the stock ratio. I have 4.56 in my 91 and I am pushing 36s. I'm right back to stock performance, all but my top speed... it tops out at about 75 - 80 mph.

As for insalling the gears, if your a good mechanic, try it out. I left it to the pros cause if you get that wrong, you have to do it over and over till it's right, and I didn't have the time to do that since mine is a daily driver.

how much will some work like that cost!
Because I got one estimate that wanted to charge me the rear with performance parts cost around
$800. and for the front around $1000.
thanks again

Re: join date

Well the way I did it was, I called RANDYS RING AND PINION... ordered my gears, carriers, and rebuild kits for each axle. I forgot what the total cost was... Anyway, there is a guy called Mr. Driveshaft that did the work for me. I gave him the parts, and he regeared each axle for $250. So it came to 500 bucks to put in the gears. These guys had a fixed rate for this which I liked, they know what they are doing. That price may be a little expensive, but considering I live in Jersey where everything is expensive... I thought it was pretty good. If you want to check out Randys, here ya go...

they can help you out with any questions you have as well.

The gear place here puts in gears for about $100 an axle. About $150 if you have something fancy like an ARB

RE: Re: RE: Re: join date

Where did you get those numbers from? Check the metal tag on the rear diff cover for numbers.

There's a jeep mechanic near here that'll regear both axles for $825, former DC mechanic.
