cam shaft question

When I changed the cam, timing set and distributor in my 258, I was very careful to line the gear marks and distributor set to #1, etc. To make a long story short, when I started it , I had to re-set the distributor 180 degrees.
My question is, there must be a difference in the locating dowel in the cam to make it exhaust instead of intake position ????? Thanks for any info.

Your probably OK with the cam and timing chain work you did as long as the 2 marks lined up on the gears. Very common mistake to set the distributor in 180 degrees out of sync. The crank turns twice for every once the cam turns, thus twice as many teeth on the cam gear vs. the crank gear. You probably brought #1 piston up to TDC on it's exaust stroke and not the compression stroke and dropped the dist. in. If that mistake has been make less that a million times I'd be surprised! LBR
