My Rear End :)

On my 2005 TJ it has the tow package and it's "trail rated" is there any hope that I would have a D44 rear end under there? My old jeep had a lift on it so it was easier to see my rear axle now my gas tank is in the way.... Please tell me I have a D44... I would like to do a disc brake conversion on it as I hate working on drums. MANY TOPICS IN, ONE I KNOW

If you dont have the Rubicon, I doubt it... And even then, it is not a "true" D44.

Just request a copy of your build sheet directly from chrysler. It's a pretty cool service they offer. My 2005 with drum brakes has a dana 35 for what it's worth

My 03 sport has a 44. If I remember correctly the easiest way to tell is if it has the little rubber plug is a 35, if its got a real plug it is a 44. But if you can't even get to it to see that then just do like Terry suggested.

What trim package of TJ do you have?

The D44 was available in the Sport and Sahara, but not the X or SE.

Not trying to be smart or anything, but how can you not see what kind of rear-end you have? The dana 30 front and the dana 35 rear have basically the same size and shape diff-cover. The dana 44 is completely different. Get down and look at your front-end(the shape of the diff-cover) and then go to the rear-end, if the cover resembles the front at all you probably have the 35 rear-end, if it doesn't them you might have the 44. And also a ? for a previous poster. What do you mean buy "their not real 44's anyway"?

As far as I understand, the Wrangler D44 have thinner tubes, so they are not "true" D44... I could be mistaken, though, as I personally dont have them...

The only thing D44 about a TJ D44 is the center chunk and inner axleshaft size. Same thin axletubes, outers, bearings, brakes, etc. as the D30 and D35 found in the same models. It's why many call them 'fake D44s'.

That's what I thought; thanks for the clarification, Bounty!

Dude read that picture you posted. All Dana 44's but the ones out of 3/4 ton Fords have .25 wall axle tubes. They all have the same size as the dana 30 and 35. It is a real 44, I don't know why it's not considered one. They also can't have the same bearings since the 44's press on and are a larger diameter shaft. And since the tube has a larger diameter, they have a larger moment of inertia than the 35s and 30s, also making them much stronger in that respect.
