Rolls backwards with handbrake engaged

When my hand/emergency brake is engaged my 98 TJ Wrangler won't budge rolling forwards but WILL roll backwards. Whenever I park on a hill I make sure I'm heading downhill out of fear that it will slip out of gear and roll backwards if I don't.

Is this just something that needs tightened up that I can do myself?

Not much you can do.Any e brake on drums will not hold as well in reverse than forward.It is the way the pad pushes on the drum.

My E brake is like a suggestion brake on my Jeep. I just put it in gear and don't worry about it.

You can also turn your wheels towards the curb when you park, that is, if there is a curb.

Adjust your rear brakes. check the Equalizer links between the 2 rear cable and handbrake cable.

Ya it should certainly be able to hold your little jeep! haha. Like SteelHeadz said make sure the brakes and cables are adjusted properly. If they all look good you might want to pull the drums off and take a look at them.
