94 YJ Wrangler shifter issue

At the end of a transmission changeout and need to replace the dust boot that attaches to the tower. The only way I can see to do this is separate the "stick" from the ball, spring, locking cap assembly that goes back in the tower. I know the "stick" can be removed from this and it looks like it is held on to the square part by a spring clip surround. Anybody know the trick to getting this off? I have soaked it in WD and tried tapping it off with no luck. Thanks for any advise.

take an adjustable on the bottom washer then put a pipe wrench on the ball then turn. It doesnt take that much pressure.....i had to do the same thing about a week ago

as for removing the whole shifter you need a screwdriver to press the clip in on one side then slightly pick up on it. Then go to the other clip and do the same thing, keep working them and they will come free
