steering stabilizer

I have a 2001 Wrangler and am attempting to replace the steering stabilizer, however I can not get the old one off. I can not tell if the original one unbolts or has to be pried off. I've attempted to unbolt it but can not, and have successfully rounded the head of the bolt off. I am now using vice grips on it and it will still not turn. If any one can advise of any useull info. it would be appreciated. THANKYOU... [addsig]

mine is a taper fit. chances of you turning it are slim to none. the trick to releasing the taper is to tap (not pound) the outer casing of the damper. this force will travel perpendicular to the casing, into the taper, which in turn will angle the force outwards with the angle of the taper.

banging on the stud usually won't work. if all else fails, get a mapp torch and gently heat only the outer casing, then tap on the casing - perpendicular.

mine was a bear, but popped right off when it felt like it. :-x
