CJ 5 Brake Size Change

Just traded for 1978 CJ 5. It came with 10 3/4" shoes and 11" drums?!?! My question is, can I install 11" brake shoes on the existing backing plate that held the 10 3/4" shoes?

Well....... Which axle are we talking about? I can guess you mean the rear axle since front drums where discountinued around 76. And is this a D44 rear? The D44 had two sizes of drums, 10 and 11's (later years). An 11" drum would not fit on the 10" backing plate. Are the shoes you have currently wearing in an odd pattern? You could just buy shoes for the 11" drum and check for fit.

Actually it has an AMC 20 rear end. My thought is only 3/4" difference would not be a big deal. Just not sure.

I believe the sizes were 10 x 1 3/4" or 11 x 2" and I dont think you can run the smaller shoes in the larger drum. I would go get shoes for 11" drum, should be around 20 dollars.
