Having problems with my timing. At cold start everything works fine. Bring the vehicle up to normal operating temp and timing is dead on. Play with the throttle and the vacuum advance works great. Kill the motor and try to restart acts like the timing is way to far advanced. Retard the distributor about 15 degrees and it starts just fine, but I have to adjust my timing back to normal setting for my vacuum advance to work properly. 89' 258 Weber carb.

I experienced the same problem when I put a long block 258 w/ a new weber in my '80 CJ. I failed to set the timing with the vacuum advance hose removed from the distributor and plugged. That was the first issue. The second issue was the marks on the timing cover. My timing cover had one mark ATDC and I didn't see the "0" on it until I paid more attention. Once I got the timing set at about 8* BTDC at curb idle RPM with the vacuum advance plugged, the motor started, idled and ran right.
