Dana 30 actuator options

I'm looking to get an opinion or some advice regarding the 4x4 cable lock install on a YJ. I already installed the cable about 6 years ago. But recently did the sbc swap and failed to realize the cable was too close to the exhaust. Long story short the cable melted and will no engage anymore. So should I replace the cable taking care to reroute it away from the exhaust? Or replace it with the permanent lock style? The Jeep is not my daily driver, but it's also not a trail only rig. Let me know what you would do and why. Thanks in advance.

The Jeep will drive fine on road with the actuator locked, if your front driveshaft is well balanced.

Here's what I do on the cheap. Remove the actuator from the front axle, slide the shift collar to engage both shafts, reinstall the actuator upside down. The fork will now hold it in the locked position.
