in a 2.5 motor for my 1990 yj, I have also learned that this motor was in different jeeps so ask your freinds look under those tarps, check with your local junk yards please.. I know why the 2.5 and not something else money is my reason. just like everyone else I am not spending that much right now but the motor is not going to last for ever, I have some bad blowby and Ive cleaned and changed everything that I was advised to but still got blowby the end result was alot of money out of my pocket and still pushing oil out the dipstick tube and still getting oil in breather box. so it's my guess its the rings.I am not the original owner so I do not know the history of motor.

If you can find one in an XJ, I've read those have slightly higher output than the YJ and TJs. Also, starting in 1991, the 2.5 got multi port injection if you want a little more power. Of course, you'd probably have to get the computer going that route.

So I take it you don't want to rebuild your motor?

I know where there are plenty of yj's in junk yards. Not sure on the shape of the engines.May be a good time to upgrade to a 6 cylinder. If you are pulling it of a junk yard dont think the price will be much different.May be cheaper for you to find a wrecked jeep in the paper buy the whole thing then either part or junk what you dont need

The whole swapping to a 4.0 is much more difficult and money intensive than most people think. There's a lot that doesn't get factored in when people initially set out to do it, and then realize they have a lot more to do than just putting in a new engine. Largely a new transmission, some transfer case work, an ECU and a whole mess of other connections.

Not to mention cutting off the motor mount perches and welding/fabbing up new ones. Generally cheaper and easier to go with a smallblock Chevy drivetrain.

Try looking in salvage yards using car-part.com, maybe you can get one close to you :) Looks like it's about the same price for the 4.2l and the 2.5l, anywhere from 350-1000 bucks depending on which place you ask and if you need just the core parts.
