My son has a 99 4.0 TJ with a manual transmission that has locked up. To try and help him save some cash I suggested we rebuild it ourselves.

i have owned several 4WD vehicles but never a jeep and I have questions.

Does this model have automatic hubs? I expected to be able to turn the front driveshaft after it was disconnected from the transfer case. If not, are the hubs locked in all of the time?

The hubs are locked and it's disengaged at the transfer case. So if you place the transfer case in 2x or neutral jack the front up and spin a wheel by hand the full front drivetrain will wil spin.

If you are interested there are kits to convert to manual locking hubs.

The transmission is definitely locked. I wanted to know if the front hubs were always locked or automatic locking hubs and my question was answered.

Welcome to jeepz.com. Looks like you're jumping right into the Jeep stuff!
