Shock Size Selection

I'm looking at a new set of shocks for my YJ with SOA and 3.5" superlift softride springs and 37's. I've read alot of posts about selecting shock size based on droop. Why not get the longest shocks you can fit under the rig under full compression? That seems like it would be the limiting factor for shock length.... Does it matter tht you're not using the full length of the shock while at full extention? If compression is what we should base shock size off of wouldn't we be able to estimate the longest shocks possible for an application based more on tire size than lift? Hope that you can follow my ramblings.... if not we'll blame it on A.D.D.

If your shocks are too long and bottom out, they will either bust themselves or the mounts. If the shocks is too short, they can over extend busting the shaft. The shocks are not designed to hold the load weight or to limit wheel travel on the suspension but rather to dampen the harshness of the spring traveling and thereby smooth the ride.

So, with that the best option is to buy the shocks that are the longest you can fit that still won't bottom out while under full compression. Full compression should be limited by a bumpstop that is fabricated to limit compression just prior to wheel/body contact or binding of other components such as steering rods. Sound 'bout right?
