We put a 2004 Wrangler 4.0 in our 1989 Wrangler. We also changed over from a standard shift 5 speed to the '04's automatic trans & transfer case.
There's quite a bit to it to make it happen - not rocket science but quite a few things to address. I don't think that you can just swing the 4.2 head...
Now come-on the guy is obviously a carpenter or a camper etc.........
Just think, if he ever got stuck out in the cold and had to survive ----- He's got his fire to keep warm right with him! You on the other hand would run out of gas and freeze!
I vote for: Take a look at the "U" joints especially if you have raised it up or are running taller tires. These factors change the geometry & put new strains on things plus its most likely the cheapest fix!
OK I did it but I put a complete driveline package out of a 2003 or 2004 Wrangler into my 1989 Wrangler.
My '89 was a 4.2 carbureted motor with a 5 speed
The new package is a 4.0 injected motor with A/C, Pwr Steering etc. the trans is the automatic & I also got & installed the transfer case...
I'm just thinking - I have to check it out for sure as to how many miles to the gallon I'm getting but all I know is that it stinks!
I have an '89 Wrangler with a complete 2004 Wrangler 4.0 engine, Automatic Trans & T-case
It was a 4.2 with a 5 speed so what ever ratio the rears are I'm not...
Thanks guys you have given me something to look into!
I eliminated all the stock gauges & took a piece of redwood that I had laying around. I mounted all new white faced Sun mechanical gauges (Oil, Amp, Temp, Vacuum & Fuel) on the redwood & I'll tell ya - it looks Great!
I bet ya I could make...
I have a 1989 Wrangler that was a 4.2 Standard Trans which we've now installed a complete driveline from a 2004 Wrangler - 4.0 engine, Auto Trans & Transfer case. It took a million little things to acomplish this but thank God for my buddy Mike who's garage we did it at - because I could never...
Ok here's my 2 cents worth!
I have an '89 Wrangler that was a 4.2 standard shift! I had all the usual carb problems etc...........
My son asked why wasn't I driving it?
I said because it needed tires real bad.
He said he would buy me a set of tires & I thought what a good boy!
In a couple of...
Anybody need a big piece of iron?
I live in Honesdale, Pennsylvania which is in the Northeastern part of the state like 35 miles from Scranton or 3 hours from NYC or Philly maybe a little less.
Anyway, I bought a complete 4.0 engine / trans assembly out of a 2003 or 2004 Wrangler. We put it in...
Hay guys - I haven't been online since November. I came down to Florida for a visit on Dec 9th & decided to stay for the winter :shades:. I coming back home May 1st & something I wanted to square away was the brakes on my Wrangler. Mine is an 89 - I look at listings for front rotors and pads &...
If the ecu is the little computer box gizmo thats mounted on the drivers side on the fender or firewall not sure where.......anyway, I put a 2004 4.0 in my '89 YJ & I got all the computer & harness stuff from the 04 to go with it!
Anyhow, I'm sure I have that box around here someplace & it was...
Feels like its time to replace my front brake pads. I took a look for giggles on ebay anyway they show a 87, 88 & 89 to be the same than 1990, 91 & up to be different.
What's the difference between an 89 & a 90? is it the diameter size of the rotor or different caliphers etc.......????
The list...
Hay guys - I just listed a TJ parts car on eBay that I bought to get a few items I needed.
There's still a lot of good stuff on it & I have it listed at a very low price. It originally was a 4 cylinder standard shift vehicle. Check it out - Dana's, AX 5 Trans, NP231 T-case, Power Steering Box...
