    Need help w/ timing a 1985 Cherokee

OK. I talked to him again. He said that on the firewall emissions sticker it says to disconnect connector J when setting the timing. He looked in the Chilton's to find connector J and the schematic shows J going into the distributor, but does not show what the other end of the wire is connected...

    Need help w/ timing a 1985 Cherokee

Thanks for the response. I must not have been clear in my original post. I don't need the firing order and we aren't replacing the distributor; we need to set the timing advance. My friend just called and said the "J connector" is what he needs to disconnect, but doesn't know where that...

    Need help w/ timing a 1985 Cherokee

It has the 2.8l engine w/ manual transmission. It belongs to a friend, so I don't have the Jeep or the Chilton's with me. Chilton's says to pull the vac advance, but there is no vac advance...as usual, Chilton's is absolutely useless. So, how do you go about timing this vehicle?

    1979 Waggy, 360...Needs rebuild.

Yup, this old engine is getting tired. Consuming a some oil and losing oil pressure occasionally. First, I'm not rich. My budget will be...$3000ish. I thought about finding a used LS1/4l60e combo. I do not have any idea if it would work and I do not have any idea how the transfer case...

    No Spark.

I got my new module today. Starts with the new one, doesn't start with the old one. I'm gonna call it fixed. Thanks for the help!

    No Spark.

My engine compartment is pretty clean and my wires are all routed neatly and in good shape. I'm actually an electronic technician and I have about 30 years of experience working on cars- just pointing out that I'm not a n00b.:-) I seriously appreciate the input, but the problem is not a frayed...

    wiper grimlyn

If you pull the breaker, then plug it back in, do the wipers then restart? Or, do you have to activate the wiper switch to get them going again? Or, in other words, is it a direct short? Or does it only short once the switch is activated? Sounds like a bad switch or relay to me.

    No Spark.

Thanks for the input. As I mentioned, I tried to start it and it fired right up. Installed the "new" ign module and it was deader than a doornail. So, that didn't solve anything. The junk yard is sending me a replacement module. With that said, my module could still be the problem. After it...

    No Spark.

Tried the key for grins and it started right up. I hate intermittent problems. Hopefully the problem is in the ignition module and the new one will fix it.

    No Spark.

All wires test good. I ordered a used ign. module for $35. I should have it in a day or two.

    No Spark.

1979 Jeep Wagoneer, 360 V8. I have the official shop manual. I'm getting no spark. The coil resistance was 7.2 kohms, so I replaced it. Still no spark. Distributor or ECU probably? I tested the output of the distributor and I think I did it right because my meter (Fluke 83) was fluctuating...

    1984 Cherokee clutch problem

My friend just replaced the clutch in his Cherokee and it won't disengage. We've been trying to bleed it, and it seems ok (maybe a little light, but I don't know this vehicle). It just doesn't disengage when the engine is running. Any ideas? Bad slave cyl? he's out there taking the transmission...

    Speedometer bounce

I bought some Mobil 1 synthetic grease and re-lubed the cables; it didn't fix the problem. While I had the cluster loose I did spin the speedo head and it seemed OK. I'll check the gear on the transmission side another day. In the mean time, I noticed that the the cables were tied with cable...

    Speedometer bounce

1979 Waggy w/ cruise control. I pulled both speedo cables and they looked great- no fraying or anything. I lubed them with white lithium grease and reinstalled. The bounce got a little better, but not much. Is the white grease not heavy enough? Should I use wheel bearing grease, or what? Or...

Under a shade tree in Rural Mexico

I don't know what the setup looks like, so I may be way off-base, but...I have what is called a "strap wrench". You can buy them at any auto parts store. Mine was designed for oil filter removal. Basically, it is a piece of square steel stock with a nylon strap attached, very simple, incredibly...
