4X4 Shifter Clip Problem

Have '90 jeep wrangler. Shift lever for 4X4 will not stay on 4WD shifter shaft on transfer case. Got new "clip" but it will still not hold the lever on the shaft reliably. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this problem? Seems like really poor design to me. How about if I drill and thread a hole through the end of the lever housing and use a screw to hold the lever on the shaft? Could drill it so the screw would hit the shaft between the "notches" on the top end of the shifter shaft.

yup, that is exactly what I did, drilled 2 holes and taped them for 1/4-20 set screws, use nylok set screws if ya got them ,otherwise loctite for the threads.

Thanks for the quick response. I saw something on another post that suggests there might be some kind of rubber piece that fits in with the clip. I do not have a rubber piece. Is there one?

I didn't have no rubber, that's not to say that there isn't supposed to be one there.
