I've never had an automatic Jeep so I don't know if this is normal or not but heres what I've got. It's an 05 TJ Unlimited. When I shift into drive or from drive into reverse I get the strangest grinding noise I've ever heard a transmission make. When slowing I also hear the noise as the transmission downshifts. Some folks suggest this is normal for this transmission but I want to get more opinions. I wish I could demonstrated the noise but it gets lost in the translation. It's a combination of a grind and a roar.

Your automatic shouldn't make any noise when shifting, it might be a good time to have your tran serviced. checking the pan and filter for more than clutch disk particles.
Yes, a ratchet like noise is a good description. Any thoughts?

Steven is correct, the trans. on the TJ's shouldn't make any noises when shifting. This ratcheting noise is more commonly heard on the Chryslers 41TE and 41RLE.. As recommended by Steven, service the trans. and see if that makes a difference.
