Chevy HEI problem in CJ-7

Hello, I have a 355 chevy in my cj-7 with the hei ignition. The problem I am having is that after it runs for about 20 minutes and gets hot, the ignition cuts out, and then I completely lose spark. The whole ignition system is new. After I let it cool down for a couple hours, it fires right up. I am at a loss as to what to do about it. Has anyone else ever experienced this. I would sure like to hear any suggestions. Thanks

I think this happened to another guy on this forum. I remember us all thinking long and hard about it. If I remember correctly, he ended up finding a small crack in his distributor which opened up when the engine heated up. How this caused complete ignition failure I'm a little unsure of, but I think that was the problem . . . but I may be wrong. Let's see what these other guys have got to say. Hope you figure it out, have a good one.

ok thanks for replying I will check it out. Also I should mention, it did the same thing with the original distributer also. The new one was ok for about 400 miles, then the same problem again. Thanks

i'm not that familiar with the HEI but isn't there a control module? my 89 did the same thing and thats what the culprit was - like i said - no real clue how the hei works but thought i'd try... g'luck and welcome to Jeepz!

They do, and it's wrapped around the distributor, inside of the cap. If you go to the autoparts store and ask for parts for a 1980 Blazer or something, they can give you new parts for it.
