engine sputters and dies

I have a 2001 wrangler 2.5L. While crossing a river or large body of water, my engine sputters and turns off. after being pulled out of the water, I wait about 3-5 min and then the engine turns on. Water is about half way up to the tires. I had the exhaust system checked and nothing seems to be wrong. Could this be electrical? Please help.

Probably the electrical system shorting out from the spray inside the engine compartment kicked up by the fan.

X2, i think the water is splashing on your distributor.

Could be your ECU as well... I have seen them die before on river crossings.
