DENVER (AP) - """"Governor Ritter is asking the federal government for an "insurance policy" to protect $4.1 million acres of roadless areas in the state from development.

Ritter's request modifies a petition submitted late last year by former Governor Owens.

Ritter told the Agriculture Department and the US Forest Service he wants interim protection for Colorado's roadless areas while the federal government reviews whether to keep wilderness-style protections for the lands.

He also says he wants the state Department of Natural Resources and Division of Wildlife to be able to work with federal land managers on any proposed activity within the roadless areas.

Ritter says he wants some areas in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests to be classified as roadless, with limited exceptions for temporary roads and other activities associated with coal exploration and development.

Dave Peterson, a spokesman for the Wilderness Society says Ritter's proposal fixes some problems in Owens' petition. But he says it also leaves too much leeway for road-building for timber and grazing. """

sounds like a classic government land grab.:(

The feds are trying to use "Eminent Domain" to secure additional ranch lands for expansion for the Fort Carson area in the middle of the state. It is meeting with great resistance.

Hopefully, the Colorado statute/federal statute for "Existing and/or Historical access roads" will continue to allow certain roads to continue to be used for recreational purposes in Colorado...

Mr. Clinton also signed a wilderness restriction act allowing for State Wildlife Areas (SWA). Trails like McAllister Gulch that start in the old 10th Army Mountain Division HQ run through the SWAs are still allowed although trees have signs close together informing people that they are within the boundaries of a SWA.

Hopefully this latest move by Colorado's executive branch will not affect existing roads and trails...
