Ice...how to?

It's the middle of winter, and we're getting rain. On top of the snow and ice on the roads. :roll:

I made it to work ok, but the parking lot is a mess! When the Jeep is in gear (auto trans) the tires just spin, no foot on the gas or anything.

My question is How can I start off in 2nd gear? If I put it in "2" or "3" will it do that? I'm not sure how I'll get out of the lot right now :lol: was able to park, but can't back up to get out.

Most auto's if you put in 2nd it will start in 2nd as long as you dont hit the gas to hard.

Another thing that may help is to let some air out of your tires,If you do let air out dont drive to fast so you dont overheat the tire.Although if there is ice I'm sure you will not be going to fast.

Also when you start out,only release the brake very slowly so you dont get the full rpm trying to move the jeep.Also may want to wait till it is warmed up so the rpm lowers.

Other than that it is ice,the worst road condition I have ever had to deal with.

I agree lower pressure in the tires. Also you may want to throw some sand down where you park. Sand will give you some extra traction.

My winter kit for work,Since my work supplies us with vans.I usually get stuck a few times a year.

20lb sand
20lb rock salt
Shovel
1 gallon gas can w/ gas in it.
Come-A-Long
Flares

Still usually call for a tow once a year.I have suggested them to buy jeeps,but there loss.

Since we Rarely get snow here and sometimes freezing Ice, here's my answer to my situation, i'm not saying that you should do this but nevertheless, It works for me.. Since i have a set of really Knobby tires, i used a box of 1/4" sheet metal hex head screws. i screwed 25 of these on a staggered pattern following the mid section of Each tires.. within 20 mins., i was wheeling on ice and winching people out of the ditch..

You can do that,they actually sell spikes that just do that.Works great on thick ice,I know a few people who ice fish and use that method to drive on the lakes.

Chains are faster to put on and off.

ok heres what i do in the mountians of ny when the ice hits. put jeep in 4 low. crawl out of parking space at idle. put in 4 hi. get on better roads and put in 2 hi. drive home. stop to play in any construction sites along the way

I thought about the chains, But i haven't found one that fits my 35X14.5- 15..

For your tires it shows a pic of dually tires,but if the measurement is the same it should not matter.

Do what we do here in Alabama when the ice hits......stay home!

If you can't, I like to air down and take it slow...Also, I used to carry 2 40 gallon water jugs in the back of my truck to add weight when needed.

If my choice was to stay home I would have been stuck in the house for over 2 weeks.Also who else is going to help pull the chevy's and ford's out od ditches.

Also you get a second set of rims and put studded tire on them. My wife has an Escort with studded tire. It does fine in ice and snow until the snow gets too high like 8-10 inches. I have read that studded tire on the back tires should get the needed extra traction.

Studded tires are fun at night on dry pavement.They give off a nice light show.

Good tips I think I'll give studs a try next winter. Luckily the cold weather is coming to an end! Now I just need to get "floaties" for the Jeep for the flooding that'll probably happen here soon...

Do check your local laws before you order a set I know in some places there illegal.
Here is a link that shows which states allow and when. But with anything found on the net...do follow up concerning the law. As they say ignorance is no excuse for the law.

Good point with checking the state laws.I know in PA you can run studs but there is some restrictions.You can only run them from October to May .I may be wrong on the exact months,but there is a time restraint.

November 1 to April 15 to be exact for PA. Yes please check local laws. But most Northern States do allow studded tire. I am getting second set of rims for the purpose of putting studs on a set for the winter.

Yep, studs are allowed here for certain months...i forget what exactly they said, but I believe it covered the winter months easily (ie: september to april or something). I would definitely get another set of wheels so they don't need to be changed out all the time.
