Paint Job?

I'm looking for advice on painting my '92 YJ... There's very minimal rust here and there, but it's the original paint job and I want to breathe some new life into her. I want to eventually get her offroad on the family farm back in TN, but for now I'm stuck in the DC area trying not to get ripped off. So far, one place in Northern VA quoted the job at $3K... probably because I'm a chick... :) I don't want to have such a nice paint job that keeps me from being adventurous, but I also don't want a Maaco job where it's peeling off in a year.

Any thoughts?!

Basically, I'd love to hear how much $$$ to expect to spend and how many coats of paint/clear coat I really need if I intend to get her offroad.

'92 YJ, 4.0L, 31X10.5 tires... just getting started...

3 grand seems a bit high to me, unless you're looking to get a Car Show Finish put on it. I'd think somewhere closer to half that would get you a very nice paint job that would last, but wouldn't be too light for some off-roading. Sad to say, they probably are trying to take advantage of you for being a "chick". That sucks.

As for me, I really don't like shiney Jeeps. I repainted my 89 YJ in my garage with Rust-O-Leum Professional, an air compressor and a nice rented paint gun. It took about 12 hours to do all of the prep work, sanding and taping, and about a half hour to shoot each coat. I like my semi-gloss finish and I get a lot of compliments on how well it turned out. I have a few pictures posted of it in the reader's rides section. All done it cost me one day of labor and $100. By the way, it was the first time I have ever painted a vehicle. Plus now when I scratch it up, I can pick up a spray can of Rust-O-Leum and touch it up. Don't know if that could work for you, but just thought i would throw it out there. Good luck!

There are quite a few people that have rattle-canned their Jeeps, even a few on here, I believe, and for the most part they turned out pretty well. It's always an option to spray paint it, or do as Magua did and get a spray gun and compressor and DIY.

$3000 for what type of paint job? Thats the cost i had for doing a car show shine with 10 coats of clearcoat on my Mustang that i drag raced. I would say a basic paint job shouldn't run more than $2000 for everything.
