power steering conversion

I have a friend who has a 92 yj w/4-banger in it and manual steering. He wants to convert it to power, how much work will be involved and what kind of price for parts is he looking at? It already has a bracket set up and have a surp. belt system on it that looks like it needs replacing anyway.

Thanks,
Dan from Orlando

Sorry yj89, I don't know, but I have a similar query about Hydrolic steering on my '76/'77 CJ-5. I had thought about getting a Flaming River stet-up (tilt coloum, steering shaft etc.) but what would I need for the hydrolic steering set-up?

I think a better question would be "what would I need the hydraulic steering for?" It's cool and all, but kind of a waste at this level unless you live on a rock pile. Maybe after you step up to some 1tons and 44" tires.....even there, I know plenty of rigs that size that are still using plain old power assist mechanical setups with great results.
It's illegal, not that that matters, but the reason it's illegal is important. It's dangerous. Since your mechanical link to the steering knuckles is gone, if you lose hydraulic pressure you also lose steering control. It also removes the feedback that you feel through the steering wheel as you drive.
For a Jeep that sees any amount of speed, I'd skip full hydraulic until it's needed
Look into an add-on hydraulic assist system, like the Redneck Ram.

yj89, the first part of my last post was directed at prariepunk. Sorry for the confusion. I guess simply saying "junkyard" wasn't much of an answer to your question, again sorry.

I would take a trip to some junkyards and see what you can get for the conversion. As far as the main "hard" parts go, you'll need brackets to mount the pump, the pump itself, and a power steering box. You may need a different shaft, but I don't know if you do or not. I've never done the conversion on a YJ, but for the couple of CJs I've done I got lucky and found all of the parts at the junkyard. I'm all about the junkyard for stuff like this. The factory has already figured out the conversion, going any other way is just more work for you. As far as price goes I can't help you, but plan a whole day for the conversion to allow for the little problems that always show up.

RE: rebuilt Np231 problems

What he said, but don't forget a new belt, fluid and probably a new hose or two. All of these parts should be available between the junkyard and Ghettozone. On a 1-5 degree of difficulty it is a 2.
