Rear end 89 YJ!

Anyone know where I can get a decent rear end for my 89 YJ? I was told by a mechanic that it was going out, I currently have an 87 rear end on it w/ lockers. The problem was when I was driving it, usually 3rd to 5th gear it was making a wierd sound when I was pressing the gas. Any suggestions? Ive had this jeep not even a week and its giving me carb problems and this now?!?!

I can realte to how you are feeling. I've had my 89 YJ for a little over a month and replaced the front hub assymbly right away. Then I just replaced the rearend it yesterday.

I'm not sure where you are, but finding one here in Central FL proved to be a challenge. I ended up having my uncle (a Jeep enthusiast himself) shipping one to me from Indiana.

Try craigslist.com and the classifieds here on Jeepz.com. I have an e-mail from a guy with a Ford 8.8 w/ 3.73 gears if you are interested. He was asking $250 but not sure if he was willing to ship. Freight charges for mine were $164.

Send me your info and I can have my uncle look for your part in IN as well.

www.car-part.com is a good source to search junkyards.

Sounds more like a transmission problem than an axle problem, axle symptoms should be in every gear.

Consider a Ford 8.8 rear axle from a '95+ Ford explorer, same lug pattern and can be found with the correct gear ratio for your application. New spring perches and shock mounts and you're set.

x2 on the transmission. Take it for a second opinion or else drive it til it breaks. Then you'll know for sure which one was the problem.
