Replaced transmission on cj7?

If it is an aluminum case then I suspect you have a T-150, Original installs from as late as '79

May have been a drop-in swap in place of a T-176 4sp.
While many of them were installed the T-4 and T-5 were the most common trans used in that build year. They would require driveshaft mods being that these are about 1-1/2" longer.

The factory trans in 1983 would be a T176(4spd) a T4(4spd) or a T5(5spd), so yes your trans is a replacement.
As to what 3spd it is there are many possibilities.
The T150 (3spd) was used from 1976-1979 so that is a good bet. However the T176,T4 & T5 all would be mated to a Dana300 xfer case, while the T150 & all 3spds prior to 1980 would be mated to a Dana20 xfer case. Funny how with Jeeps every answer leads to another question.
The Dana 20 has a short shift lever that is far to the passenger side & almost under the dash(a strech to reach from the driver seat while buckled in).
The Dana300 has a straight shift lever that is about 12-15inches long & right next to the trans shifter.

is this good, bad or just a fact of life? :???:

Hard to say if this is good or bad as we don't what you have. If you have a T150 its not a bad transmission, just doesn’t have a low gear. The bolt pattern on the Dana 300 with one exception, the 1980 Scout version, is round and the back bolt pattern on the CJ T150 has the "Texas" pattern (bolt pattern kind of resembles the shape of Texas) It might be helpful to look and see which x-case you have, Dana/Spicer 20 or Dana 300 and if you can read any of the numbers on the side of the transmission. Also the CJ T150 front bolt pattern is what is called the Ford "butterfly" pattern. (Like a butterfly with it's wings open) The other direct blot in option could be a 1972 to 1975 T15.
