Replacing my fender flares

I've got a 1999 TJ with a 4" Skyjacker lift and 33x12.5 tires on American Racing 15x8/5x4.5 wheels. Down in southern California I never worried much about spray up from the road, but now that I live in Tahoe, the Jeep (and sometimes me!) are getting completely covered in crud when the roads are wet. And I can't imagine that all the salt/ice-melter on the roads is any good for my paint job either!

So, I'm looking into getting some new fender flares. Any recommendations? I've looked at Bushwacker. They offer two sizes: 4.75" and 6". Do I need the 6"? That sounds kind bulky to me.

Any and all comments appreciated!

RE: WEBER CARB backfire

I've found fender flares are pretty expensive, especially considering they are just a few pieces of plastic. I really do like those cut-out fender flares Bushwacker makes though. They would look really nice on your rig. I don't know how wide the stock flares are, but 4.75" sounds wide enough to me.

RE: what would you rather do?

I think the stockers are 3" unless its a Sahara (TJ sahara anyway) or a Rubicon. I think those 2 have 4" flares.

RE: Re: Random Poetry...

Can you paint those bushwacker flares ? .. I have stock flares now and Ive looked into painting them to match my jeep .. I like the sahara look.. a guy quoted me $80.. but I hear it wont stick for long...

I dont think I can spend the $300 for those bushwackers anyway.. Ill just paint the stockers if it will work..

RE: Re: RE: Shock absorbers for a TJ

I just got he best-top ones for my YJ. I like them although they are a bulky 6" and a steep $300. I need them for my state, which wont pass it if tires stick out over 1", In my case the tires (13.5") would be out over 5". Plus I hate tires that stick out past the fenders (or flares in a jeep), looks like a cheap lowrider.

I know a guy who used molded vinyl garden edging rivited to his stock flares to comply. Looks like shit but it passes and doesnt spray.

Bushwacker says that its flares can be painted. I decided to go with the 6" ones. I measured and my tires stick out quite a bit, so I'm erring on the side of caution. I just hope they don't look TOO bulky...

Vinyl garden edging? Yikes.

FYI, I found the best price on the Bushwacker flares at 4 Wheel Supply. I also ordered my new front bumper (Garvin Wilderness) from them. Great service, fast delivery, and the best prices I've found so far.
