new jeeper w/dumb question

okay... so i got the lift/tires done... 89 258/5sp w/stock axles... she'll do 65 in 4th @ around 1800 rpm so i'm not really hurtin on the hiway.. i want to upgrade the axles to something more stout with lower gears... in the mean time i was wondering if a set of axles from a 4banger (4.11 gears) would be a direct swap (thinking boneyard pickin's...) should help a little till i get 'round to better axles... also, mine has a lim. slip = did that come stock in the 4.11 / 4 cyl axles?

RE: Pictures from my trip!

I believe the ford 8.8 out of explorers had 4.11 gears with the limited slip. Dont think they go lower stock.

RE: new jeeper w/dumb question--HELP!

thats where i'm heading but wanted to know more about the stock 4banger axles for the mean time till i can afford the "real swap..."

The 4banger 5spd axles are most all 4.11 gears, never seen one with a LS. They'll be a direct bolt-in, but '93-'95 uses a larger ujoint at the rear pinion.

I'd go ahead and get a Ford 8.8 with 4.11 and LS, then get a D30 from a 4banger 5spd YJ for the front.

Your stock axles are likely 3.07 so you'll love the peformance upgrade of 4.11's.

RE: Re: RE: Why did I loose all of my posts?

I think he has a 4banger so he has already got 4.11's.

RE: welding spider gears

i definitely agree with bounty.. best combination you can get for your application. look for a 95 or later explorer for the rear axle

how close to "bolt in" is the 8.8? - like spring perches, driveshaft, brake setup, pinion angle etc... i'm pretty strapped for cash (xmas coming and all...) and i thought about the cost factor - if the 8.8 doesnt require a ton of other mods, i'll just hunt one of them down for the rear...

Its not a bolt in thats for sure. You have to reweld the spring perches, hook the brakes up, get a yoke adapter, and I believe do something with the shock mounts, but not totally positive on that. If you can weld, your golden. I have heard the brakes can be a little tricky to get hooked up right, but I hate brakes so I probably read to far into brake stuff.

RE: Samauri Question

For the YJ swap, a 95 4cyl would be the best, direct swap in! larger pinion U-joint and the 297 front axle U-joints

if you do the 8.8 go around the junk yard and look for a yoke, some of them will fit the yj driveshaft from 88-92 (spicer part 2-2-671) thats the smaller one and the one you cna get from MORE. i found out the hard way that the 93-95 have a 1350 u joint, the same as some other 8.8's so if you can get an 8.8 witht that yoke youll be good, some of them have it and others have the smaller version. look to spend about 80 bucks to reroute the brake lines using stainless lines and couplers, the bolt pattern is the same as the jeeps, the pumpkin is offset 2inches more to one side than the d35, and the axle is 120% stronger. you can find it with 4.10's and disks and limited slips but you'll pay for it dearly. if you dont wheel hard then just bolt up a d35 with 4.11's and the 95 d30 with 4.11's.

well alright so you can find a good deal on. its just not easy to find a good deal on that exactly. if you look long and hard for it then yea you'll find it eventually, or you may just get lucky the first time
