76 CJ- Frame Rust and Firewall Attachment

My 76 CJ7 rebuild is finally nearing completion. Started with a new 258 and blown... err... everything else... So after new front and rear ends, T-150 rebuild, Dana 20 rebuild, new bushings and shocks, new wiring... The old girl is finally getting ready to go.

2 final questions, though:

I have two rust holes (half inch by 3/4 inch) on each side of the rear crossmember braces above the axle. I'm told it's a common problem, but- Is it necessary to fix immediately? What's the best way to go about patching and bracing?

Also, my steering column has a little bit of flex in it. You can grab the wheel and warp it up and down a touch, and if you stomp the brakes the wheel shifts some. The play seems to be coming from the joint between the firewall and the body tub... Can that be re-welded? Is there some easier way to brace the column?

Thanks in advance. I can handle all the mechanical work, but this fabrication/welding stuff is a little beyond me.
