ok i dont think that the vacume part the the system works and this is what brings up this? my front drive shaft spines all the time and when i shift into 4wheel the front diff.works? now my ? is how do i tell what has been done to make it work. ie lockers,tj shafts , or what. oops this is a 89 yj with 258 5 speed. thanks in advace

Even with the vacuum disco disconnected, the front DS will spin a little. It's the viscous properties and parasitic drag from the diff and/or transfer case.

You should pull the diff cover and change the fluid if the jeep is new to you, and check what type of differential is in there. it's also easy to pull the vacuum disconnect to see if it is original or replaced with a 1piece shaft.

To test your vacuum disconnect, remove the two vacuum plug connector at the axle and feel for equally strong vacuum switching between each port. One port for 2wd and the other for 4wd. That 3rd vacuum line is for the 4wd light at the firewall. Also remove the disconnect from the axle and make sure the shift fork moves easily by hand.

If you're ever wheelin and the disconnect is not operating properly, simply remove it and install it upside down. It will then hold the disconnect in the connected position until you turn it back right side up.

ok. when i pull the diff. cover what do i look for? i ask this becaus i have clue what i am doing as far as gearing and what not goes or looks like inside the pig. look at the vaccume lines and they are disconected. thanks again in advance

if not a solid axle conversion then go posi-lok or homemade cable to remove the vac. system - then you'll know if its engaged or not... (can you tell i HATE the vac system?)

havent had a chance to dig in yet but i do know that the vacume is disconected and the front does work in the snow. thanks for the response . i will update everyone as soon as i can get in the garage and warm it up enough to work on it. thanks again

well if the vaccume lines are disconnected and it works in the snow then i would think it already has something done to it. either the flipped fork or tj shafts. i would look into that to figure out what has been done already
