general tire question

When I purchased my YJ, it had 4 almost new tires. Good tread and tread pattern and they have gotten me everywhere I needed to go and some places I didn't believe I could get.

The question ... they are "P" rated tires (as in passenger). Should I spend the money to get the "LT" tires or wear out what I have?

Thanks much!

It has been my experience that there are a few topics that can get a Jeep forum buzzing!

The first is tires. I love the way you worded it. You avoided the heavy discussion. The usual question is, "What should I buy and why?" Everyone has their favorite tire and that is what they will extoll.

Another topic is Ultima batteries - What to get?

And another topic for dissent is On Board Air - What to get?

But my answer to your specific question is, Wear 'em out! Gives you more time to decide where you are going to ride, the usual trail conditions that you will ride on, whether you'll drive it on the highway or not and what you'll do to mod other facets of your jeep...

I agree with everyone else........wear 'em out if you have no complaints!!! The LT designation, if I'm not mistaken, just indicates a greater load capacity (more plys and perhaps a thicker sidewall). Use your time with the tires you've got to find out which ones you'd REALLY like to run (perhaps the same, who knows? It's all personal preference according to planned usage). When you can't get someplace you'd like to get because of your tires......that'll get ya' thinkin'!!!!

If you want to start doing a little 4 wheeling with that Jeep you really should step up to at least an all-terrain LT type tire.

If that is of no interest to you then if they're doing what you need them to do then keep them. If you never offroad and snow and ice are not a concern then you might as well just replace them with the same type when they finally do wear out.

I've done a fair amount of 4-wheelin' with this rig since picking it up and getting it "trail ready" ... posted some pics last fall after doing the eastern 3 miles of the Rubicon (granite stones the size of your head covered the trail for the last ~2 miles!), and a couple of other neat sections around Lake Tahoe. I'll repost the pics in a little while as I pulled them down some weeks ago.

I don't want to be guilty of replacing "dumb luck" with thinking the setup was what it should be. It appears the trails I've been on so far have been rated Class 5 at the worst, and that was for for very short sections. As far as my wife is concerned, if she never sees another Class 5 it is just fine by her!!

You can see from the signature that I err on the side of caution as you don't need lift and winch for the typical class 5 trail.

Oh, and I'm converting the A/C compressor for OBA ... yes, I'll add an oiler and coalescent filter to the mix! Will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for all the comments. Even in differing opinions it gives much food for thought.

While I would probably say go with at least some sort of real all terrain tire (which probably will be an LT) when those are shot, I see no reason for you to change before you wear your current tires out if they suit your needs. So I guess Im just agreeing with the others.

they will make it for now and they will take you to work so as you can save up for a more aggresive tire , right....hang with them they will be ready to replace soon enough anyway at least if you do'nt distroyee them on a trail next week and if and more than likely when that does happen you will be ready to get whatever you want. Tires are pricey so use them till you ripp one... drive fast take chances!
