I' am trying to figure out what is the difference and why I see some jeeps with the leaf springs bolted on top of the rear axle and some like mine, bolted to the bottom of the axle?

Bolted on the bottom is factory.

On top is a way you can lift your jeep cheap if you have the equipment and knowledge to fabricate.It is called spring over axle or (SOA)

About 3" to 3-1/2" of lift.
