Transmission issues??

I put my 88 yj into first gear to take off at a red light and it didn't engage into first gear whatsoever, with a little bit of toying with the clutch it made a loud clunking noise and promptly took off... any ideas of where to start??? Thanks

So you could feel it slide into gear but nothing when you let the clutch out?? Did it do this only once or only in first gear?
I'd start with checking the fluid. Do you hear any rattling when idling when stopped? Then check the throwout bearing.
Any clutch slippage?
Could you pull out in 2nd with no slipping?
