I would have said 02 sensor first - then check for a cracked exhaust manifold...but I think that problem is usually associated with the 4.0L / I-6 and you have a 4 cyl...though I guess it could still be the cause. Check the welds closely on the header - sometimes hard to see... The backfiring...

I am almost 100% positive that 97-02 seats are interchangeable. Google it - you will see everything for TJ seats groups 97-02 together every time.
