4 cyl issues

I've recently rebuilt a 1988 2.4l. Runs like doodoo. Rough and lacks power. Seems as though I'm a tooth off with the distributor. I've changed in both directions with slight improvement but still has rough running condition. A timing light reveals I'm running 24-26 btdc. No remove ng and repositioning of the dist seems to change this. What am I missing? Tried the ole ether around vac lines with no leaks. Maybe have a vacuum line in the wrong place? IDK. Can't find any routing diagrams.

Just to verify, this is an 88 Wrangler right?
 
It's a 2.5L and the timing is likely computer controlled, not user adjustable. Be sure to follow the FSM on finding TDC and dropping the distributor in correctly.
 
Any specific time it runs bad? Or kind of all the time?


Battery terminals clean and battery in good shape?

When is the last time you changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor?

Fuel filter clean?

Compression test?
