how do i find out what ring & pinion gear ratio is in my jeep have the 4.O
is there a place i can go to decode the metal tag on the firewall pretty sure i have the ax-15 trans not sure about the transfer case just bought it and i love it so far any help thanks much :-)

Actually if noone has been into your diffs there should be a metal tag (usually on the rear to the left side) with the gear ratio on it. The only other way I know of to identify for sure is to pull the cover and look at the ring gear and find what the ratio is it will look something like this 41:10 You divide the smaller number into the bigger number for the ratio.

You should have 3.07, it's the most common with the 4.0 5spd in that year jeep. To be sure, check the first three digits of the metal tag bolted to either front or rear diff cover.

Welcome to jeepz, diggin the screen name. Can I call you Buck?

Thanks bounty i have a metal tag on the rear pumpkin but i cant make out what the ratio is it just has a bunch of numbers that dont make sense to me the first three digits are like 550 or something like that

you can also jack the rear up, count the number of times the tire spins to one pinion rotation, that will give you a ball park. 6 cyl ax 15 yj's had 3.07:1 but there were a few with 3.54:1

so if the tire spins 3 revolutions, 307's spinds 3 1/2 times 354's

thats not backwards is it.. crap brain hurts..
