I think I'm gonna cry - HELP

Problem in 97 2.5L manual transmission Wrangler: 1J4FY29P8VP449112.

Jerks and bucks when in first gear, and to a lesser extent in other gears, either hot or cold. It never really seems to run strong.

I bought and read the service and diagnostic manuals. I also had it at the dealership and they couldn’t find the problem. They ran the fuel pump volume, pressure, and hold tests – results: OK. They also checked the spark with the ODBIII. They did not find any check engine errors.

I changed the TPS and the Air Temp sensor. There was an improvement with the TPS but nothing drastic. The air temp sensor was changed because the service manual said that it should read 10K ohms @ 70 degrees. The actual value should be 1K ohm as read on the new device. I also checked all the cables and connections and they were fine. The air filter looked new. The distributor cap and rotor looked bad so I changed them - no change in operating condition. The distributor had little globs of junk under the dust cover and seemed a bit wobbley so I changed it and rechecked its position but no change in performance.

The engine does not idle rough, nor does it operate differently hot or cold. I have run out of ECM sensor ideas. My next suspects are the catalytic and the ECM itself. ECM #s:
Part #: 56041305AD, (could be HD, writing was a bit blured).
Code: 26550
Date: 7/23/97

By the way I recently purchased this vehicle used. When I bought it, it had a leak in the power steering reservoir and there was quite a bit of oil in the compartment - R&R power steering reservoir and cleaned engine compartment. I put injector cleaner in the gas and that didn’t help. The Catalytic is cheap from JC Whitney and I may replace it with their CatCo version, higher throughput.

There had been a broken exhaust manifold stud, and associated exhaust leak, at the rear of the head and the head had to be removed to remove and replace that stud. The head was rebuilt at that time, therefore the cam timing must be correct, as well as the gaskets and head.

Suggestions? Thx

I have contacted Jeep but they would not help when I submitted this question by email through their contact us link.

please DO NOT TAKE OFFENSE TO THIS: but one thing to consider is that if you just got the car then if you are not great at driving stick on a truck improper clutch release creates a jerky feeling... just had to say it.. I am sure you know how to drive it right.... then again... it could be a bad clutch or have to do with the gearing

1" body lift for tj

Bruce I don't know if you are still having your problem but I can tell you this my sons car was just doing the same thing I found an air leak in the intake tube. Take a very good look make sure there are no leaks after the mass air sensor spray some starting fluid while it is idling listen for a change in rpms. Good luck
