A simple little oil change *rant*

I go to do a simple little oil change... And I make the mistake of looking at my wheel to figure out what's wrong that it's grinding and shuddering and clattering so much...

Brake caliper bolts somehow went AWOL. Not broken off, not stripped out, just somehow GONE, both of them. So brake caliper assembly began riding inside of the rim, grinding down both rim and caliper, and causing enough heat to destroy piston, which started leaking and popped out when I pulled the wheel off. Steering knuckle has gouges worn into the tracks that the pads ride due to the severe misalignment of the un-bolted caliper assembly. U-joint? Cracked in half... Axle bearings? Toast. Bumpstop? Flattened. Alignment? Please! Tire bought in May? 25% tread at it's best points, and the oddest freaking wear pattern I have ever seen in my life (it's like each tread part was cut at an angle, front to back)

If I didn't have bad luck, man... At least my buddy and brother are loaning me their respective Jeep so I can get to work till my oh-gawd-I-really-can't-afford-this wrenchfest day off Saturday...

OK, rant over.

Same exact thing happened to the white when we went on our road trip. The caliper was riding inside the rim. We got lucky and just had to get new hardware and re-tap it. Sounds like you didnt get so lucky. Good luck with all that.

RE: Re: RE: found at 3am: Couch on fire in middle of street

thats not good. i had a funny grinding sound once and i took the wheel off and found i had about 1/8inch of my rotor left. one of my pads fell off and left its backing plate behind.

RE: installing engine-any good manuals?

you talking to me or saurian there sparky.

RE: Re: RE: Hate to bash, but....

Saurian, I think you need to turn your radio down a bit so you can hear that stuff going on MUCH sooner!! With that tire wear, I'm assuming that's been going on for a while. Sorry to hear it, bro. Hope you're back up and running cheaply and soon.

Saurian. I agree with Mud, ya gotta pay attention to the noises aside from what comes from your speakers once in a while!

RE: My jeep from space

I was, I was, but I thought it was something else... Common sense was telling me that since I had done the brakes recently, it couldn't be the brakes, instead, I figured it was the steering alignment...

Yeah, that wasn't a fun discovery :(

But at least I get to borrow my brother's grand waggy

All the MichiganJeepers in my area are banding together and helping me scrounge parts for a wrenchfest tomorrow... Quality people, Jeepers... Definately good people...

RE: MC2100 questions

Woot!!!

Progress is being made... Michigan Jeeper Tonka gave me the steering knuckle off his former YJ, my mom cancelled three appointments so she could go to Birmingham Chrysler Jeep and get a remanufactured brake caliper for me, and Michigan Jeeper Eric (c) drove me out there and helped with the repairs...

Rim was salvageable, components were replaced slowly but surely, till the driveshaft yoke got bent, and in the ensuing struggle to get the new U-joint in, the socket went off-center, and blew out the U-joint cap... So, hub's being held together by a spare stump shaft (also from Tonka), axleshaft and stump shaft with broken new U-joint in it are in the back cargo area... But, Jeepy's up and roadworthy again, at least in 2WD... Hopefully, final repairs will be completed after work Sunday to bring her up to 4X4 capability (might be a little late for SNC)... At least she can get me to and from work... My 2nd cousin, MJer SonicJay will soon be bringing his OBDII scanner by so I can find out what's failed that I'm running super rich and now averaging about 9 MPG overall freeway/city (gas is 3.00/gallon up here again, I don't need this!)

Oh, these silly silly Jeeps...
