Brake Upgrades for a CJ

RE: steering problem

I'm looking for a cheap brake upgrade for my CJ-5. It needs to be able to stop in 20ft at 20mph..... sounds easy but right now I have to pump'em to get slowed down..... any ideas? I've heard about a brake booster from a camaro doing the trick, what about hydro boost, I think I saw it once here on jeeps

RE: BABY!

(bump) Should this be in the Jeep Performance section?

I know that what one person feels safe with might be considered a death trap to someone else, but if it's working properly, it shouldn't be that bad. The factory four wheel drums that came on my CJ7 weren't really bad, and I've run both sizes of the factory disc setup in several CJs in the past and never really thought of them as dangerous. I think instead of looking at upgrades at this point, you just need to make sure your factory junk is up to snuff.

Should this be in the Jeep Performance section?

No, this is the right section for questions like this.

Re: RE: Installing complete exhaust

It's got R/Drum F/Disc, I suppose once I get it down from the lift I'll check that out. I had to replace the rear brake lines not that long before it puked...... they exploded on me while I was on the road

Don't get me wrong here.......better brakes are always a good thing. I'm just thinking that it would be a waste for you. Since you are planning an axle swap, spending money on fancy brake parts to hang on the factory axles doesn't seem like the way to go. Upgrading things like the power booster is kind of along the same lines, you may end up swapping them out when you do the axle swap.
The factory disc setup should do a fine job of stopping your jeep at it's current weight. It might not stop like a new Corvette or anything, but it should be okay after you get it squared away.

RE: rubicon issues / yj fixed

Many jeep owners let the rear drum brakes go without adjusting them, and the self-adjusters rarely work properly. I'd start by adjusting the rear brakes, you may notice quite a difference.
