Broke a shock mount

Went wheelin saturday, came home and noticed my shock a danglin'... it's the pass. side rear, the upper frame mount broke clean in half.

Today I take the shock off, and look at the parts of the mount. RUST. So I go and look at the rest of the other half still attached to the frame... HOLE. I guess this is a common problem, stuff can collect there pretty easily. But now I have to fab a new mount AND patch a hole in my frame.

Suggestions? Never patched a frame before. I guess I should cut out the rotted stuff too... damn!

to patch the frame, I would cut out as much rust as you can, weld in a patch, then put small fish plates on the out side edges!

As for the mount, and with your SOA I would consider the Tera-flex YJ rear shock mounting bar. allow you to better turn your shocks, run longer shocks, and allow better flex.

RE: tires and gears

Throw in a crossmember between the two framerails and mount both shocks to that. This will allow you to run a longer shock since you can lean the tops inboard a little.

Yeah, snitty actually suggested the same thing as you 2 guys. I was unaware that Teraflex made a crossmember just for that idea... I'm tempted just to buy that rather than make something, it's only 75 bucks! I hardly have time to drink a brew I have so much to do! Thanks for the input, I will have to patch up that hole too... its about the size of my pinkey.

Oh one more thing, dunno if this is on all Wranglers... when I was checking out the broken mount, I noticed that on the bottom side of the frame rail there is a plate being held on with 2 bolts right where the frame rail bends. Is this some sort of drainage? The plate looks a little rusty too...

Is it directly above the rear axle? Sounds like the factory bumpstop with the rubber fallen off, especially if the bolts are on the bottom of the frame and not inline with each other front to rear.

RE: avitar

Nope, it's not above the axle, but infront of it. It does look like a bump stop mount but smaller, maybe 1.5" from bolt to bolt. All my bump stops are intact. I'll see if I can get a picture of it.

RE: i be needin some soft uppers

That too was once a bump stop, Mine fell off back in 99, I remember it fondly!

RE: Re: RE: A MUST or not?

It's a spring snubber, similar to a bumpstop for the axle. Mine is still intact with the rubber on one side, and just the metal plate on the other.

RE: 91 Cherokee Not Startin (Sorta)

Your right, looked at it again and its the mini one... I just assumed there were just 4 big ones. Like Bounty said, one is intact and the other isn't. Mystery solved!
