cleaning rims

I have a set of what i think are aluminum, but I could be wrong. Anyways, they have some kind of rust or film on them. Does anyone know how to make them shine again.

I used to detail cars on the side. If it is just a grit and grime and not pited into the wheel, get some Greased Lightning and Purple Power. I mixed half and half in a spray bottle and soaked them for a couple of minutes on each wheel, ( and don't get it on any painted surfaces, it will leave streaks) then used a pressure washer to spray the mess away.

Would that be to harsh for chrome - my rims are pretty dirty as well.

I never had a problem on anything from mag wheels to hub caps. Just in case, try it in a small spot or on an older rim. Also, for carpet and floormats, even rubber mats that 50/50 purple power and greased lightning mixture worked great! Due to the amount of the cleaner I used. I just mixed bottles in an insect or weed killer pump sprayer. Soak the floormats down and let them set, then just took the pressure washer and sprayed them off. Worked like a charm. Of course on carpet, you would have to use a small pump sprayer and soak the area, then I used water and a brush, scrubbed the area then used the wet vac.

Wheeew, now that I look back at it, it's amazing how dirty some of those vehicles are that are traded in.

For most chrome polishing, where as your getting rust spots the best way is to run down to your local home depot and in the abrasives isle your looking for 1000 grit steel wool. This isn't an SOS pad but a soft steel wool that will polish anything that has been chromed. Polished Aluminum rims should not be showing any signs of rust...there isn't any carbon in Aluminum. But will oxidize and get a white film. Any Aluminum polish and something like a mothers polishing ball will do the trick to bring back the shine.
