My Jeep quit running on Superbowl Sunday. I was puttin' around a field and running around 3000rpm and she just up-n-quit! Well after about a week of testing this and that I found I had sheared the gear at the end of my cam shaft, oh $h!t. Has this happened to anyone else? I hear it's a major front end tear down?!? Help!!! This might wait 'till I move to Texas 'bout April, my father-in-law is a mechanic. Any tips? Yeah yeah, I know "Better me than you", but please any help is welcome.

Yeah, you've got to tear the engine down somewhat. The whole frontend and valvetrain of the engine has to come apart so you can remove and replace the camshaft. The radiator support/grill assembly will need to be removed too, so you'll have room.

I can't just remove the water pump and whatever the distributor goes into? All I need to do is replace the gear at the end, NOT the whole camshaft! Will I need to go through all of this anyway?

Skid Plate and Transmission mount...

Yep....you're right. I forgot that the AMC has a removeable drive gear. You still need to tear down the front of the engine to access it, but everything else can stay in place.

Oh thank the Jeep gods! I'm glad AMC used Ford parts, well some Ford parts anyway. Thank's Junkpile, you've saved this jeeper one helluvuh headache.

Well, I got it off, a few states away and some late nights later. I got another gear for $25 brand new and a used cover for $75, i still need the gear at the end of my distributor.... can I get this or do I need to get a new distributor? It'll be loud, I blew up my exhaust tryind to pull it  foolish me huh?

I (Mrs. punk anyway) will be picking up both Dist. Drive Gears on friday the 16th of Sept. and I;ll be going into the shop sat. morning to get it put back together..... it'll be louder than all holy get out and such sayings. Any Tips Or Suggestions JUNKPILE?
Others are welcomed to comment too!

Get a service manual for reference and it will be a cake walk. You might also consider a new timing chain as long as it's all apart. Good luck.

IF ANYBODY CARES TO READ ABOUT MY RANTING

Got off early from one job ($money$) to go work on my other J.O.B. (JEEP).
Got all of my parts together and headed down to "Coleman's Automotive Center" where the Jeep resides. I got everything cleaned, the mounting surfaces polished/brushed up, all of my nuts and bolts together and cleaned up and all of the necessary tools close at hand (and my jeep 6+ft in the air ).
I started putting it back together today for about 2hrs...... then found out my distributor was shot  , FUCK ME, huh?, a new distributor is gonna run me 50$ not bad but one of the parts Mrs. Punk got me is no longer necessary (Distributor's drive gear) $25 for a part that I though I needed :( . I have to wait a week before it comes in and when it does I might not have the money (car payment/Sunfire). Well, it's ALMOST all together, I had to quit early to go home and watch the Punkette (Lyndsey).... and now more waiting.... this sucks goat parts[/b]

One step closer...... any CJ owners have trouble with installing the radiator, had to take mine out to tear apart the engine. I can't seem to get the nuts and bolts in there, it's a tight squeeze....... ANY TIPS?

I have had time over the past three days to work on my jeep, as I had only worked 5hrs Tue, 2hrs Wed and 6hrs today. Well, I was hard(ly) working today and finished 2 days of work in about 3/4 of a day. Once I was home for about 5 min, the phone rang, it was Louie....

Me: Hello?
Louie: Zach?, hold on.... listen to this "TURD" (Engine revs in the back ground)
Me: You got it running?!?
Louie: Yep, now all's you need is to bring down the battery in the garage!
Me: I'm on my way!

It was a short conversation but almost made me wet my pants. As I was on the phone, Erin came out and saw me dancing like a little kid about to weat his pants and asked if Louie knew had he had done..... WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? But it ran after 2-3 NEW distributors (bad from store). NEXT STEP Exhaust........when I get money to pay for the new starter (oh, yeah that went yesterday) and roter (can't find the new one from OH) and some other "NEW" part(s) I can't think of right now.

RE: filling in body dimples cj7(few cool pics inside)

After only 9 months....
You must be living in the Bermuda Triangle of Jeep parts. I have never heard of anyone having that much trouble.
Now go sling some goo.
